Heimenkirch in History: It All Began in the Year 1275…
In the year 1275, Heimenkirch was noted for the first time by the name of “Haimenkirch” in the so-called St. Gallener Urkunden.
In June 1491, the first stone of the castle Schloss Syrgenstein was laid by Veit “Sürg”.
In 1738, the local breweries Meckatzer Löwenbräu and Brauerei Karg were founded.
In the year 1814, Heimenkirch was separated from the Austrian region of Vorarlberg along with the entire Westallgäu and subsequently belonged to Bavaria.
In 1909, the Zweckverband Wasserversorgung Heimenkirch-Opfenbach was established as an administrative union for water supply providing for the municipality and the nearby village of Opfenbach.
In 1927, the local company Hochland was founded under the name of “Schmelzwerk Hochland” by Georg Summer and Robert Reich.
On 1 June, 1932, Heimenkirch was given the status of a so-called Marktgemeinde. In the month of May, 1978, an administrative union was formed between the town and the nearby villages Opfenbach, Maria-Thann and Wohmbrechts, which was dissolved on 1 January, 1980.
In the year 1976, the Abwasserverband Obere Leiblach was founded joining Heimenkirch, Opfenbach, Maria-Thann and Wohmbrechts for waste water treatment.

Our Coat of Arms and the New Logo
Our Coat of Arms and the New Logo
The Coat of Arms
On the 6th of January, 1937, Heimenkirch was assigned the right to bear a coat of arms by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. It depicts a silver church (the ”Kirch” in the municipality’s name) on green ground in front of a blue background; the roof of the church and its steeple are colored in red. Above the building, you can see an ancient silver hat decorated with a bunch of egret feathers – this refers to an ancient noble family of knights by the name Syrgenstein who carried the adorned hat in their coat of arms and whose landholdings were integrated into Heimenkirch in the 19th century.
The Logo
Since the year 2012, Heimenkirch has his own logo and slogan, developed by the municipal council in cooperation with the local design studio Grafino. The name of Heimenkirch in extended typeface symbolizes the municipality’s spatial extent, while the graphical separation of the word components “Heimen” and “Kirch” functions as emphasis. The color orange epitomizes the heart of the town; blue stands for the creek Leiblach, originating in Heimenkirch and feeding into the Lake Constance; green is the color both of the municipality’s rich nature and culture. Above the letters, there are 19 dots forming a check mark and hinting to the Leiblach valley with the church depicted in center; each dot stands for one of the 19 districts, seven of them on the left and twelve on the right side according to their position in relation to the main street. They can also be seen as symbol of the meeting-points and community of the townspeople and add a welcoming and appealing touch to the logo.
Our Sister Cities
Our Sister Cities
Hungary – Balassagyarmat
Heimenkirch has officially been twinned with the city of Balassagyarmat, Hungary, since 28 July 1998. Located in the north of Hungary with a total of 17,000 inhabitants, Balassagyarmat forms the center of a small region and adjoins Slovakia.
France – L’Ile d’Olonne/ Vairé
The municipalities of L’Ile d’Olonne and Vairé are located in the French region of Vendée at the Western Atlantic coast. Together, they count about 3,900 citizens. Contact has been established by the municipality of Röthenbach, which is about ten kilometers from Heimenkirch and has been twinned with a city in the Vendée region since 1989.
Ever since Heimenkirch and the two French municipalities have approached, the bond between the citizens has strengthened and there have been trips and meetings on a regular basis. As establishing an official sister city status has been approved by all of the municipal councils, a group of delegates will travel to France from August 14-18, 2013, in order to sign the required documents and confirm the partnership.
This is Our Town
This is Our Town
„Heimenkirch – So lang. So gut.”
Since 2012, these words officially stand for the town of Heimenkirch: “Lang” (long) hints to the spatial extent of the town’s centre and its outskirts, while “gut” (great) points to an outstanding quality of life. The municipality is located along the federal highway B32, as well as along the segment of the federal railroad line connecting the cities of Munich and Lindau. At 668 meters above sea level, Heimenkirch lies in the heart of the Westallgäu region between the Alps and the Lake Constance.
Not only about 3,700 permanent residents but also our guests enjoy the outstanding quality of life that the town offers. Many traditional farms, often proudly decorated with generous flower arrangements, paint a beautiful picture of the town’s rural heritage. The residents of the municipality and its neighbor towns are offered as much as 1,000 jobs directly in Heimenkirch due to an excellent economic structure. In addition, a large number of leisure activities offer fun and recreation in the most different ways that leave almost nothing to be desired.
